India is known for the two classical music forms that developed largely independently in the past, the Hindustani music of North India and the Carnatic music of South India. The Hindustani music is known in particular for its instrumental style, while the Carnatic music is mainly characterized by its vocal pieces composed by numerous musicians of the past. The improvisation part is less pronounced in Carnatic than in Hindustani music. Nevertheless, Carnatic music cannot do without improvisation. However, it is limited to special compositions and song structures. Basically, the Carnatic instrumental music is played according to the rules of singing. An important feature compared to Hindustani music are the numerous Raagas used in South India. Raagas are tonal structures with their own character, which are based on correspondingly ascending and descending tone series and their modulations and embellishments.
Renate Streuli has been learning classical South Indian music (Carnatic music) from Vijaya Rao for over 15 years. At her Ranga Pravesha, she will sing some of her favourite compositions.
