DIVYA – From Heaven to Earth
A dance spectacle by Vijaya Rao, featuring Vijaya Rao, the Nateschwara Dancers and their Indian music ensemble. Special appearance: Dr. Sharmila Rao.
We take the opportunity with our musicians from India to pay homage to Nateschwara on its 42nd anniversary and to our Gurus Shri Pathagudi S. Ramaswamy and Shri Narayanaswamy Purushotthaman with a very special program. Two & more generations of dancers from Nateschwara will join in the exclusive program “DIVYA”. We will be greatly pleased to have many dancers, musicians and rasikas attending our performances. Our hearty welcome to all.
The program ‘DIVYA – From Heaven to Earth’, is a Bharata Natyam Dance Theater, a representation of the 5th Veda (Natya Shastra) in Sanskrit – a journey of Indian dance, from the heavenly mythical origin to its present earthly form. Vijaya Rao created, composed and choreographed this piece in collaboration with Sanskrit professor Dr. Jaydev Jani of Baroda University and musician Balasubramanium Anantharaman.
“DIVYA” is a classical Indian dance production in Cheyyur Bharata Natyam style of the well-known Bharata Natyam exponent, dance teacher, choreographer and composer Vijaya Rao. The dance play narrates stories in Sanskrit from ancient Vedic script Natya Shastra, depicting the origin of classical Indian dance, describing the cosmic dance of Shiva, of goddess Parvati and the Apsaras of the heavenly reign of Indra. Adding compositions of her own, Vijaya Rao proves the everlasting and at the same time vivid actuality of traditional Indian Dance. The spectators enjoy a bouquet of virtuous dance with mythical stories and poetic anecdotes embedded in Indian live music: A fiery display of rhythm along with mesmerizing dance.
