Solo by Sharmila Rao
Sharmila Rao completed her stage debut in classical Indian dance Bharata Natyam at the age of twelve. Since then, she has been performing on stage as a professional Bharata Natyam dancer performing as a solo dancer, as a partner with her mother and teacher Vijaya Rao and as the main dancer of the Nateschwara Dance Company. Her studies in Indology have brought her to deal more intensively with Indian traditions and her reception in the modern age.
As a teacher of the Nateschwara Academy, but also as a dancer, Sharmila Rao combines her academic and artistic education. She wants to convey more than just movements and stories. Through her background knowledge and her dancing experience, she can bring the art closer to the viewer in many ways. Bharata Natyam, of which she is convinced, must be experienced with all senses in order to understand him.
35 years Nateshwara, that is 35 years Sharmilla Rao. With a personal homage to her artistic place of birth and activity, Sharmlla Rao shows a selection of her favorite pieces: dances, which tell a special story, for herself, but also for Nateschwara and Sharmila Rao.
