On June 23, the South Indian flute ensemble of J.A. Jayant (bamboo flute) will perform. He will be accompanied by three percussionists on the mridangam, the ghatam (clay pot) and the kanjira, a kind of Indian tambourine.
J.A. Jayant hails from a South Indian musical family that produced famous musicians over several generations. Jayant learned to play the flute from his grandfather Sri T.S. Sankara who was a student of the legendary flautist T.R. Mahalingam. Flute Mali, as he was popularly known throughout South India, has shaped and changed modern flute playing in the classical South Indian art music over the last 50 years like no other musician.
From a young age, J.A. Jayant has emerged as one of the most important new flute players in South Indian classical music. The special feature of his playing is the singing instrumental style, with which he interprets the vocal compositions of Carnatic music in an extraordinary way. His clear, soulful and rhythmically diverse playing is breathtaking and leaves the listener with an enchanting impression.
